Stability vs. reversibility of memory distortions

Hartmut Blank
University of Portsmouth

Abstract
Research demonstrating memory distortion is abundant, but its temporal stability is hardly explored (pointing to a default assumption that, once distorted, a memory will remain distorted). The talk begins with a ‘prologue’ that first illustrates the situational instability of the eyewitness misinformation effect (specifically, a meta-analysis of the ‘preventability’ of this effect through post-warnings), and then provides two examples of the actual reversibility of memory distortions after an initial occurrence (reversibility of the eyewitness misinformation effect and of stereotype influence on memory). The talks ends with highlighting a new ‘memory resilience’ metaphor and (if time left) with some theoretical speculations about factors underlying the stability/reversibility of memory distortions.
